The captivity in Babylon befell them after the exodus from Egypt. The whole population, then, was transported. The city was made desolate, and the sanctuary was destroyed. It was then that the word of the Lord was fulfilled that He spoke by the mouth of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “the sanctuary shall be desolate seventy years.” Hippolytus (c. 205, W), 5.178.
