Barbarians

There are four classes of men in this world: barbarians, Greeks, Jews, and Christians. Aristides (c. 125, E), 9.264.

Because they did not know God, the barbarians went astray among the elements. They began to worship created things instead of their Creator. For this purpose, they made images and enclosed them in shrines. Aristides (c. 125, E), 9.265.

I approve of the simplicity of the barbarians. Loving an unencumbered life, the barbarians have abandoned luxury. Clement of Alexandria (c. 195, E), 2.277.

This is the history of the oldest wise men and philosophers among the Greeks. And that most of them were barbarians by extraction, and were trained among barbarians, what need is there to say? Clement of Alexandria (c. 195, E), 2.315.

Barbarians were inventors not only of philosophy, but of almost every art. Clement of Alexandria (c. 195, E), 2.317.
